The Evolution of Metal Roofing System

Almost all construction firms are now using metal roofing for their building constructions. Lead, copper or any soft and malleable metal is used by skilled labor since they are easy to form using handheld tools. But because of the availability of a more durable and easy to use metals such as aluminum and steel, as well as the availability of different forming machine equipment, metal roofing has developed into a more modern and cost-effective construction material.

The evolution of steel coating

Galvanize steel, a material used in making metal roofing is made when zinc is oxidized and came into contact with steel. Galvanized steel was first made in 1837. In construction, galvanized steel or corrugated steel is used as roofing for a smaller area.  When zinc and aluminum are mixed it formed an alloy called galvalume. It is more durable compared to zinc covered steel. For industrial roofing, it is used since it is much easier to form and a lot stronger. Pre-painted galvalume is usually used in most big buildings because it can easily be customized and it enhances every building’s appearance.

The evolution of metal roofing system

Even though the coated steel roofing has been already very durable, the development of a more durable roofing material is still ongoing. A breakthrough in technology is needed for both the roof materials and how to install the said materials. Because of the rise in demand and also the increase in numbers of larger buildings, more technical techniques are used to install the panels properly. The use of two-piece floating clips necessary to assist thermal actions as well as anchor panels through the uplift. The clip is then attached to the structure’s supports.

To eliminate the possibility of short-circuiting, Installers uses a thermal spacer which is made of foams which are compressive-resistant. These short-circuit is due to the compression of fiberglass insulations over purblind. Roof sealants also evolved over time. Sealants can now be used in the inner leg of the panel when doing roll forming of the panels. A sealant can also be applied by hand, pre-cut, or can be pumped using a caulking gun for a more water-resistant paneling system. Another way to seal is by using a butyle tape. It is also durable, but is not good when the panel is too exposed to the weather.

Drainage

If the previous roofing system has a poor drainage, usually the new structure can redirect the flow of water to the gutter using factory-made curbs. The only problem is when your structure uses a flat roofing. There are 3 solutions to this problem. First is to put an interior drainage. You can put the drainage in between intervals near the flat roof center. When water goes to the drainage, it will run through the pipe system beneath the roof surface. It then exits the building thru the piping drainage installed outside.  The flat roof drainage is covered with screen strainers to avoid the leaves, branches and small debris go into the pipes. Another solution is by using Scuppers. Scuppers are installed at the edges of the roof and it projects water away from the building. It protects the building walls by keeping the building itself dry all the time. Scuppers are cost effective than the interior drainage. The last solution is by installing gutters. This is the traditional way to the flat roof problem. Open pipes are installed at the edge of the roof to catch the water and transport it away from the building with a series of laid pipes at the side of the building. This is the easiest way to protect the flat roof since it doesn’t need to remodel the roof itself. Cooler metal roof

Zinc coated galvanized iron and galvalume reflects light more effectively, a roof with a higher reflective property and emissivity is needed in most industrial and residential buildings. A pure metal surface has less emissivity that’s why polymeric films are needed.  Most contractors or designers don’t want their roofing coated white since it is very restrictive when it comes to design, that’s why most designers use reflective pigments to address the issues on design as well as the problem with energy efficiency.

Photovoltaics

Combining photovoltaics with the seam metal roofing is becoming a trend in the construction world. Most metal roofing has a life expectancy of 40-50 years, just like a framed PV module. With this kind and durable roofing, you can create a sustainable system for your roof at the same time, avoid compromising with its warranty and water-tightness by creating a power source powerful enough to last for at least 30 years.
